This half-day session gives a briefing on piracy and allows delegates to participate in syndicate exercises from the full 3-day course programme.
Delivered by specialist crisis psychologists and security professionals with extensive experience at sea and in major crisis situations, the three day course is designed to give masters, officers, senior seafarers and key office personnel knowledge on how to act appropriately in acute critical situations during piracy, hijackings and similar crisis situations.
Through classroom work, role-playing and practical exercises the participant is grounded in psychological first aid focused on how to assist themselves and colleagues during and after a significant crisis incident.
Over the last three years, Maersk Training Centre has trained over 350 senior personnel working in waters with a potential security risk. The course covers:

Behaviour in attack, hostage and kidnapping situations

Crisis psychology, including:

Aspects and characteristics of the "acute critical situation"

Immediate and post physical and psychological reactions on an individual and group level

Mental first aid on a buddy level and professional intervention

Approaches to enhance the possibility of survival during piracy

Answering questions in relation to the psychological aspects of piracy.
