MDC NEWS UPDATE JUNE 09
North East Leads Way in WorldSkills UK Engineering CADD Competition
The Marine Design Centre was delighted to host a challenging day of competition over the weekend with 10 young designers competing in the Northern heat of the World Skills UK Engineering CADD competition. And although results are yet to be released, it is hoped that the region will have a strong showing in the national finals in London later this month.
The competition, organised in the Northern region by TDR Training, tested competitors’ performance using CAD to produce 2D technical drawings, 3D models and 3D assemblies. In addition, higher level competitors were required to produce animations including GDT (Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing) in technical drawings. Highest scoring competitors in the UK final will ultimately represent the UK in international competition.
Congratulations to all competitors for a superb showing, including (in alphabetical order!) Tom Adams (Unison), Chris Bradley (Miller UK), Andrew Burgess (Tanfield Group), Rhys Long (Wellstream), John Moulson (Bradford College), Anton Serrant (Bradford College), Rambir Singh (Bradford College), James Turnbull (Siemens Protection Devices), Luke Turnbull and Jamie Warriner (both British Energy).
The Marine Design Centre is also pleased to be supporting the national finals by supplying some of the hi-spec PCs normally used in its design office for contestants in the finals!

Winning Tenders...
An Introduction to the MDC Contracts & Tenders Database
Wednesday 1st July 2009, 08.30 - 11.30; Marine Design Centre, Newcastle
There’s a big difference between writing tenders and winning tenders, and between being a supplier and a preferred supplier.
This stimulating and interactive workshop, in partnership with Newcastle specialist Nimis, will outline the size and potential opportunities of the public sector market and show you what you need to do to win a share of the estimated £175bn spent by public sector organisations each year.
The workshop will also see a demonstration of the new MDC Contracts & Tenders facility, showing how you can not only access tenders and opportunities, but gain an overall picture of the market and understand how you can fit into the supply chain.
The MDC Contracts & Tenders facility gathers thousands of public and private sector opportunities every week from across web sites, newspapers, databases and opportunity portals, which are then filtered to provide marine and offshore sector opportunities through the MDC website.
Access is free for member companies.
The facility can be used to:
- Access contract opportunities
- Bid for opportunities
- Follow tenders across UK, Europe and US
- Locate new customers
- Produce mailing lists
- Find out who buys their competitors' products/services
- Identify and monitor competitors
If you are overwhelmed, puzzled or even frustrated about bidding for public sector contracts, then this stimulating event can be your solution for success.

The event is free to attend but registration is essential and demand is expected to be high. To reserve a place please email info@marinedesigncentre.com or call 0191 255 1710.

Funding Opportunity Opens as North East Sees Major Contract Wins
With the potential for North East companies in the developing offshore wind markets being superbly demonstrated in the last month by two major contract wins in the region, the Northern Wind Innovation Programme is a timely opportunity for companies to tap into funding for the development of new technology.
Last month saw South Tyneside firm McNulty Offshore win a contract from Siemens to construct a 1,600 tonne offshore substation which will be installed at the Greater Gabbard wind farm 16 miles off Suffolk. Meanwhile, Darlington based CTC Marine Projects were awarded their first contract in the offshore wind farm industry by E.ON Climate and Renewables UK, for the lay, installation and burial of seventeen subsea power cable arrays linking wind turbine foundations at the Robin Rigg Offshore Wind Farm in the Solway Firth.
The Northern Wind Innovation Programme, established by the Northern Way Partnership, will provide a £2.6 million research fund to enable northern companies with capabilities or potential in the offshore wind sector to identify and realise new opportunities. Funding is available for projects in:
-
AC/DC Electrical Conversion
-
Foundation System Optimisation
-
Bearing Quality Improvement
-
Installation Technologies
The programme is also keen to fund projects developed by collaborative consortia. The deadline for Expressions of Interest in the programme is 31st July. For further information click here.
Diesel Power ... Down Under
