Babcock Design & Technology (BD&T), a business unit within Babcock Engineering Services, operates from offices at Rosyth,Newcastle and Weymouth.

BD&T is a modern, dynamic engineering service provider whose principal business is the design and through life support of naval defence and commercial marine assets. The company is one of the largest marine design houses in the UK.
Our team of over 400 specialist managers, professional engineers and detail design engineers deliver a comprehensive range of services that can be applied individually or as integrated packages, in order to ensure effective innovative solutions for our major clients.

Our professional capabilities combined with up-to-date processes and the latest information technology provide cost effective professional support to feasibility studies, detailed design development, material specification and procurement, assembly and installation for high-integrity assets. BD&T is playing an increasingly vital role in building up the ship design team for Babcock as part of the CVF Carrier Alliance. Specifically the company is involved in the detailed design of Blocks 1, 2 and 4 and will be providing continuous engineering support throughout the Carrier’s life.

With the recent addition of the DML Group, its expected that Babcocks Design capability will increase in numbers to in excess of one thousand engineers and technicians and will be the largest marine design and engineering provider in Europe. On Tyneside, BD&T employs over 70 people at its offices in Royal Quays. The Tyneside operation has a particularly strong reputation for engineering designs for a wide range of vessels including FPSOs, Offshore Support Vessels, Pipe Laying Ships, Cable Laying Ships, Drill Ships and Special Purpose Vessels. An example of this is the current basic design effort for the heavy lift ship the “Pieter Schelte” which is the largest vessel in the world. Design work on this is being done in collaboration with the customer, Allseas in Holland and with local partners in the North East.
