What is the Facility?
The 40-seat state-of-the-art Common User Facility (CUF) is a key asset of the Marine Design Centre and is located in our offices in Newcastle upon Tyne. It comprises secure office space in an IT-rich environment with substantial communications facilities available on a ‘hire by the hour’ basis.
The core of the Common User Facility is a design office with fully networked high specification workstations supported by a full suite of peripheral devices including printers, plotters and scanners. To ensure high speed, high capacity data transmission it is provided with a 2MB/s datalink ‘burstable’ to 10 MB/s. The design office is supported by various design software packages.
Surrounding the core design office is a suite of meeting rooms and a conference facility with full audio-visual and video-conferencing facilities that are available for hire as an integral part of the design office or as separate facilities.

The Common User Facility is available for hire on a short or long-term basis and will enable design companies to expand to meet specific project needs without permanently increasing their overhead.
The Common User Facility is ideal:
- as a neutral location for collaboration on major projects
- as a facility that designers can utilise if they experience a surge in demand
- as a training facility to develop new skills or simply for refresher courses
